Martin Luther King Day, the birthday of the Rev. Martin Luther King, leader of the black liberation movement, has been a federal holiday since 1986 to commemorate his achievements. Actually he's birthday is on January 15th, but the third Monday in January became a holiday by the vote of the US Congress. Also, on this day the US stock market is a closed.

It is the second time an individual's birthday has become a national holiday after George Washington, the first president of the United States. Martin Luther King, an American Baptist pastor and black liberation activist, served as the leader in the nonviolent “Civil Rights Movement” until his assassination in 1968.

Who is Martin Luther King Jr.?

1929.01.15.~1968.04.04.
Nationality : USA
Birthplace : Atlanta, Georgia, USA
Major Awards: Nobel Peace Prize (1964)
Main book: Stride toward Freedom (1958)
Main speech: I have a dream (1963)

He was born on January 15, 1929 in Atlanta, Georgia, the eldest son of Michael Luther King, a Baptist pastor. Growing up, he was greatly influenced by Mahatma Gandhi of India, who sought to realize the abolition of racism and liberation of the colonies through non-violent resistance. In 1948, he graduated from Morehouse University and Crozer Theological School in Chester, Pennsylvania, and received a doctorate in philosophy from Boston University Graduate School. In 1954, he took office as a Baptist pastor in Montgomery, Alabama, where racial discrimination was severe.

In December 1955, a black woman was arrested in Montgomery for not giving up her seat to a white man on the bus. With that incident, he opposed black discrimination and led 50,000 blacks to the Montgomery Bus Boycott Struggle, and the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in 1956 that the racism law on buses was unconstitutional. He later formed the Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC), and based on non-violence, he served as a leader in the "Civil Rights Movement" to obtain equal citizenship for blacks to white people.

In particular, he expressed his sincere hope for the eradication of racism through the speech “I have a dream” during the March in Washington in 1963. This speech moved many people and acted as a catalyst for the movement to abolish racial discrimination. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964 for his contribution to the abolition of the racial discrimination movement. From 1966 onwards, activities were carried out to eliminate discrimination and poverty that exist in everyday life, demanding housing security and true racial integration in schools, centered in Chicago. But in April 1968, while supporting a strike by black cleaners in Memphis, Tennessee, he was shot and killed by a white far-right, James Earl Ray on a motel balcony.

The part of famous Speech, I HAVE A DREAM

I have a dream that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today!

I have a dream that one day, down in Alabama, with its vicious racists, with its governor having his lips dripping with the words of "interposition" and "nullification" -- one day right there in Alabama little black boys and black girls will be able to join hands with little white boys and white girls as sisters and brothers.
